The Department of Commerce came into existence as UG department in 1946 and its post graduate program started in 1957. Earlier the department was a part of Holkar College, Indore and was affiliated to Agra University, Agra. From July 1962, its Commerce and Arts departments separated from Holkar College and came under Government Arts & Commerce College, Indore.
From 1962 to 1968, Dr. A.G. Sharma was the first HOD of Commerce who later on became the Vice-Chancellor of Rewa University.
The department has introduced several professional and job oriented courses like Tax Procedure, Advertisement, Foreign Trade, Office Management, and Computer application at the UG level (under the self financing scheme). Presently Dr. Anoop Vyas is the HOD of the department.
The department is a well known research center of commerce with 12 senior research guides.
